| Holdings Description: | The Arboretum's Archives are a rich resource that documents the
institution's history and is a repository for other 19th, 20th, and 21st century horticultural and botanical collections. In addition to the papers of the Arnold Arboretum's founder and subsequent directors, the archives include field notes, travel records, diaries and journals of plant hunters such as Ernest H. Wilson and Joseph Rock, records by plant propagators such as William Judd and Alfred Fordham, and papers of botanists, taxonomists, and horticulturists Susan Delano McKelvey, Alfred Rehder, and Donald Wyman. The archives also contain early maps and design plans for the Arboretum, scrapbooks, news clippings, drawings and posters, building plans and architectural drawings. Included in the Archives is a collection of 30,000 images dating from 1870 to the present. These photographs document the living collection and record the development of taxa within the collections. In addition to a collection of early and on-going views of the Arboretum's landscape, which was designed through a collaboration between Charles Sprague Sargent, the Arboretum's first director, and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the Archives contain a series of photographs from collecting expeditions beginning in 1906 to China, Korea, Japan, Tibet and other areas of the world.
