Holdings Description:Founded in 1972, the Fogg Art Museum's photograph collection is comprised of an anthology collection representing the history of fine art photography as well as the aesthetic use of photography largely in the United States and Western Europe from the invention of the medium in 1839 to the present, with special emphasis on modern and contemporary photography (~10,000 photographs). It also holds six research collections that focus on American documentary, social reform, vernacular, and professional photography: Ben Shahn (~5,000 photographs and ~1,000 negatives); Cartes-de-visite and cabinet cards (~20,000 card photographs); Tintypes (~16,400); American Professional Photographers Collection (~1,000 prints and ~16,000 negatives); Social Museum Collection (~4,500 photographs and ~1,500 graphic illustrations); and the Boston Transit Collection (~700 glass plate negatives and prints). The latter three research collections, in addition to a portion of the anthology fine art photography collection, were placed on permanent deposit at the Fogg from the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts in 2002.
