| Access Information: | Access is open to those with either a Harvard ID, membership in the Museum (Friends of the HMNH), alumni of Harvard and Radcliffe, visiting researchers or students/faculty from other schools with letters of introduction, or else with special permission from the Head of Public Services or the Librarian. The general public may use the library three days per calendar year free of charge. Borrowing privileges are granted to those with a current Harvard ID or may be purchased. Call 495-2475 for more information. |
| Circulation Policy: | Books less than 100 years old circulate to anyone with a current Harvard ID. Periodicals circulate only to graduate students, staff, and officers of the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology. The borrowing time is 4 weeks for any Harvard ID holder, 8 weeks for affiliates of the Departments of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology or Molecular and Cellular Biology.
Renewals may be requested online in the Hollis Catalog, in person, by telephone. Overdue notices are sent automatically by the Circulation system; please call 617-495-2475 with questions. Reserves circulate for 2 hours. |
| Holdings Description: | SUMMARY: The Ernst Mayr Library collects works at the graduate research level in zoology, animal behavior, biological oceanography, cell biology, conservation biology, developmental biology, ecology, evolution, genetics, molecular biology, natural history, neurobiology, and paleontology. Special Collections include older natural history volumes and the archives of the Museum of Comparative Zoology.
MATERIALS NOT HELD:In general, the following kinds of works will not be found, or not in significant quantities: agriculture; fisheries biology; and geology (other than paleontology).
SIZE: 109,000 monographs; 165,000 serial volumes; 2,223 currently received serial titles.
EXPANDED COLLECTION DESCRIPTION: The Ernst Mayr Library collects works in the following fields: systematic zoology; general zoology (comparative anatomy and physiology); organismal biology; biodiversity; conservation biology; ecology; evolutionary biology; marine biology; biological oceanography; ethology; paleontology. In addition, the library has an extensive early natural history collection, as well as Special Collections consisting of many old and rare volumes including the papers of Louis Agassiz and others associated with the Museum. The archives of the MCZ are also here.

| Services: | Internal ILL Policy:
HARVARD: The Mayr Library lends all circulating materials or will provide photocopies to other Harvard libraries without charge. The lending period is four weeks. ALA forms, email requests and FAX requests are accepted. (FAX to 617-496-6838.)
External ILL Policy:
NON-HARVARD: The Mayr Library lends circulating materials to libraries in the U.S. and Canada, and will provide photocopies to institutions whether domestic or foreign. (ALA or IFLA forms are required.) The charge for lending to libraries with no reciprocal agreement is $20.00 per title and the lending period is four weeks. There is a minimum charge of $15.00 for photocopies to libraries without reciprocal agreements.
ILL Borrowing Policy:
BORROWING: The Mayr Library will borrow materials for students, faculty and staff of the Departments of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Molecular and Cellular Biology, and for other persons under special circumstances.
